JINS -the Japanese Eyewear chain store has more than 90% products are made in China and localized
“Each year, JINS supplies about 10 million pairs of glasses worldwide, of which 9 million are produced in China,” Maki Ube told reporters. He noted that the rapid advancement of China’s eyewear manufacturing capabilities has helped companies increase production capacity and enhance product quality. “In the past, high-quality glasses came from Japan; now they come from China.”
In his view, the improvement in manufacturing quality at the source is closely linked to China’s recent push for intelligent manufacturing. According to the 14th Five-Year Plan for Intelligent Manufacturing Development, by 2025, 70% of large-scale manufacturing enterprises are expected to achieve basic digitalization and networking, with over 500 smart manufacturing demonstration factories established to lead various industries. The market satisfaction rates for intelligent manufacturing equipment and industrial software are expected to exceed 70% and 50%, respectively.
When it comes to the eyewear industry, China has already established several global production hubs. For example, Danyang in Jiangsu Province produces over 400 million lenses annually, accounting for 50% of the global total. The Henggang eyewear manufacturing belt in Shenzhen is known for its “30-minute supply chain,” offering high-precision OEM services that support the global mid-to-high-end eyewear market.
Having worked in China for over a decade, Maki Ube has witnessed these developments firsthand: “In the early days, Chinese partner factories used manual prototyping, which resulted in a high defect rate. Now, with 3D printing for prototypes and automated, intelligent production equipment, defect rates have significantly decreased, production capabilities have improved across the board, material waste has been reduced, quality has become more consistent, and costs have gone down.”
This has given the company confidence to further expand production in China. Ube said that JINS currently works with three partner factories in China and plans to add one or two more in the future: “All of our brand’s high-end product lines are now manufactured in Chinese factories.”
